The Gatesway Foundation says state budget cuts caused financial woes. Documents show the problems run far deeper.

The Gatesway Foundation quickly fell from steady financial footing and tumbled into debts so unmanageable its leaders began frantically liquidating assets, slashing employee pay and picking off clients they deemed “unprofitable” just so they could finagle a way to pay its bills and staff.

'Most unprofitable'
"High Flyin' Lester Carter" had been a client of The Gatesway foundation for 50 years. But when the agency ran into financial problems, Lester and several other clients deemed "most unprofitable" were let go.
