By Dylan Goforth  When I started in journalism, the editor at my newspaper sat me down and asked me if I thought he made decisions in favor of the reporting staff or the editorial staff. It was a trick question. He said his ultimate loyalty belonged to the newspaper’s readers. I’ve tried to take that mindset with me ever since, and at The Frontier, we make it our mission every day to do the best job possible for our readers. Today our readers have the opportunity to help support us. Giving Tuesday is one of the most important days of the year for small newsrooms like The Frontier. And thanks to NewsMatch, a fundraising movement to support independent journalism, your donations to The Frontier are matched through the end of the year.  Your donations matter, and help fund the journalism that holds the powerful in Oklahoma accountable. In 2022, I watched Frontier Reporter Clifton Adcock spend days sifting through campaign finance data to get an idea of where Oklahoma’s gubernatorial candidates were getting their support. I watched Reese Gorman drive all over Oklahoma on the campaign trail, following Kevin Stitt and Joy Hofmeister, seeking a better understanding of what they were pitching to voters. I watched Kayla Branch hold state agencies accountable, and spend weeks working on a story about how utility deposits keep some Oklahomans from obtaining housing. I watched Brianna Bailey, our managing editor, juggle the job of working with our reporters to make their stories as strong as possible, while also reporting on Oklahoma’s deal with electric vehicle manufacturer Canoo, investigate Oklahoma City’s public housing, and spending months working on stories about pregnant women being prosecuted for drug use. I often hear from Oklahomans thanking us for our commitment to in-depth journalism at a time when reporting staffs are shrinking across the country. ICYMI: Stitt’s big win shows Oklahoma is as red as ever Even with millions poured into attack ads, Oklahoma voters still rallied for Stitt, who defeated challenger Joy Hofmeister by more than 150,000 votes. Hofmeister’s campaign gained momentum from small donors, including many teachers Stitt led in fundraising from larger donors in health care, construction and other industries, according to a Frontier analysis. Oklahoma’s three residential polling places are vital for rural voters County election officials said recruiting polling locations in remote rural areas is difficult, so they sometimes turn to people willing to open their homes to voters. Your donation funds investigative reporting for Oklahoma By Kayla Branch  Your donation to The Frontier helps us report on vulnerable communities across the state and hold the powerful accountable.  This year, I wrote about hospitals in the Oklahoma City metro dumping patients experiencing homelessness to the street or to shelters unequipped to handle their medical needs. I covered the state’s serious decline in drug court enrollment and how, despite millions in new funding, a staffing shortage means Oklahomans with disabilities may still struggle to receive the services they need.  During the election cycle, I analyzed campaign contribution data for Markwayne Mullin’s run for U.S. Senate. And I’ve written about the way state and local government officials have tried to get around federal guidelines for how to spend pandemic relief money.  I was also able to collaborate with another local outlet to write about the ways that expensive electric deposits can be a barrier that can keep people with limited income from finding stable housing.  All of these stories were made possible by donors like you. Investigative journalism requires time and resources — two things that are not always available to reporters in traditional for-profit newsrooms.  Even a donation as small as $5 a month helps us uncover stories that are hidden from the public view and follow complex issues across the state. Now through Dec. 31, donations to The Frontier will be matched by a collaborative fundraising movement called NewsMatch.
