Your donations have helped us build a database of officer-involved shootings

No central database of officer-involved shooting information exists, so we set out to create one

View this email in your browser Your donations helped us create a database of officer-involved shootings The fatal-officer involved shootings of Eric Harris and Terence Crutcher were big stories, and much coverage was dedicated to the shootings and the aftermath. But as I was asking questions and trying to put the pieces together following both killings, I started to realize some critical context was missing. How often were people killed by officers in Oklahoma? Where did those killings take place? Who was being shot? Which officers were doing the shootings? It turned out there was no one place that collected all that information. So in 2018 I set out to do it myself. It led to about a dozen stories, including ones detailing who was most likely to get into an armed encounter with police, as well as stories on the fact that officers are increasingly going unidentified following fatal shootings.
